K-Way MOTUS

K-Way MOTUS is a three-wheeled vehicle, for two passengers. The vehicle is fully enclosed with a crash proof frame so there is no need to wear a helmet.
Active tilting allows the driver to steer like a car while the vehicle automatically leans into the curve like a motorcycle giving a completely new driving feeling.

Grazie alla cellula di protezione non c'é bisogno di portare il casco.
Il sistema di inclinazione automatico piega il veicolo verso l'interno della curva quando si sterza, si guida come un'auto ma sembra di essere su una moto.

Some X Prize Entrants and Why They Lost
[Alcuni veicoli che hanno partecipato al X-Prize e
il motivo per cui sono stati battuti]

The winners of the Progressive Insurance Automotive X Prize, the three-year competition to produce 100-mile-per-gallon vehicles, will be announced later this morning in Washington.

Although there are only three winners, 24 vehicles were fielded from countries that included Canada, Italy and Switzerland. Their cars resembled lobsters, Lyle Lovett’s hair and ordinary Fords. For many reasons, they lost.

Here’s how the teams explained it:

[ I Vincitori del Progressive Insurance Automotive X Prize, la gara durata tre anni per promuovere la produzione di veicoli capaci di fare 100 miglia per gallone (42 km con un litro) saranno annunciati stamattina a Washingon.

Sebbene ci siano solo tre vincitori, sono 24 i veicoli, provenienti da vari paesi tra cui il Canada, l'Italia e la Svizzera, che hanno preso parte alla gara.

Le loro auto assomigliano ad aragoste, alle acconciature di Lyle Lovett e qualcuna a normali Ford.

Per molte ragioni sono state sconfitte.

Ecco i motivi che hanno portato alla loro esclusione:]

American HyPower ZAMS

The name of this converted Toyota Prius comes from the acronym for Zero Age Main Sequence, the point at which a star burns on pure hydrogen.

The vehicle’s hydrogen-conversion process was said to change the state of normal fuel in a gas-electric Prius hybrid and create hydrogen in a device under the hood before feeding the gas into the combustion chambers.

The Colorado-based team of scientific engineers, with one member living in Budapest, had trouble with the fuel tank provided by X Prize officials and was eliminated in June.

K-Way MOTUS

The creation of Stefano Carabelli, an Italian design professor, the ultranarrow tandem vehicle was powered by an Aprilia motorcycle 800cc V-Twin engine and electric motors.

Mr. Carabelli wanted to keep the driver as high as possible to stay in synch with traffic. The cabin automatically leans from side to side, resisting centrifugal forces and keeping the waferlike vehicle from turning over.

“The real innovation here is the tilting mechanism,” he said. An extremely lean fuel mixture resulted in engine failure during testing.

Carabelli ha cercato di tenere il pilota in posizione piú alta possibile, in modo da avere un vantaggio in visibilitá in mezzo al traffico.

L'abitacolo oscilla automaticamente in curva, per contrastare la forza centrifuga, riuscendo a impedire che il veicolo, largo come un wafer, si ribalti.

"La vera innovazione nel nostro veicolo é il sistema di inclinazione", dice Stefano.

A causa di un difetto di lubrificazione, dovuto alla limitazione del carburante, si é verificata una rottura del motore (da qui il ritiro).]

Commuter Cars Tango T600

Rick Woodbury operates the one-man car company Commuter Cars in Spokane, Wash.

He claims supercar abilities for his tandem and customers who include George Clooney, Sergei Brin and Larry Page.

After the Tango failed efficiency testing in July, Mr. Woodbury said he didn’t design the vehicle for efficiency alone and that one day expressways will have special Tango lanes.

West Philly Hybrid X Ford Focus

A team made up of Philadelphia high school students entered a Ford Focus adapted as a plug-in hybrid.

But it didn’t properly recharge during testing after an electrical cord became unplugged.

“What would have put us over the top is if our team’s charging algorithms would have been more sophisticated” said Ann Cohen, the team manager. “They are now.”

FVT eVaro

George Parker, the president of Future Vehicle Technologies, based the model name on the Avro Arrow, Canada’s interceptor aircraft of the 1950s.

“The inspiration behind that was the Canadian technology,” Mr. Parker said. His three-wheeler uses a Honda Gold Wing motorcycle engine in series with electric motors.

The inventor, from Maple Ridge, British Columbia, had been developing the tandem since the 1970s.

The first of his three eVaros was finished in 2006 “before we heard about the X Prize.”

The vehicle overheated during testing.

Torino & Superga, K-Way MOTUS on the road

A video shooting of K-Way MOTUS around the streets of Turin and up the hill of Superga, a famous panoramic spot near by the city.

Finally you can compare our vehilce with regular cars and scooters and see how it looks like in an urban environment.

Un video di K-Way MOTUS in giro per le strade di Torino e sulla strada che porta alla Basilica di Superga, sull'omonima collina, un bellissimo punto panoramico sulla cittá.

Finalmente potete confrontare il nostro veicolo con auto e moto tradizionali e apprezzare le sue caratteristiche in un classico ambiente urbano.

and the winners are...

Il Progressive Automotive X Prize é giunto al termine.

Si é svolto ieri a Washington D.C. l'avvenimento conclusivo, é stata una cerimonia pubblica presentata da Peter Diamandis, Presidente della X Prize Foundation, in cui hanno partecipato Nancy Pelosi, Presidente della Camera dei Rappresentanti degli Stati Uniti, e altre illustri personalitá.

Durante la cerimonia sono stati annunciati e premiati i vincitori nelle tre categorie in cui era suddiviso il concorso.

Per la classe Mainstream, 4 ruote, 4 posti, autonomia di 200 miglia,
Edison 2, vince 5 milioni di dollari.

Per la classe Alternative side by side, 2 posti, autonomia di 100 miglia,
Li-Ion Motors, vince 2,5 milioni di dollari.

Per la classe Alternative tandem, 2 posti allineati, autonomia di 100 miglia,
X-Tracer, vince 2,5 milioni di dollari.

Quest'ultima é la classe in cui ha partecipato anche K-Way MOTUS.
Alla fine della storia, ci resta l'orgoglio di essere stati nei 24 team che hanno avuto accesso alla fase finale del concorso.
Per dare l'idea di quanto fossero difficili da raggiungere gli standard fissati dal regolamento osserviamo che in due categorie é rimasto un unico concorrente in gara nella prova finale.

Ai vincitori vogliamo dire:

Progressive Automotive X Prize has come to an end.
Yesterday the Award Giving Ceremony took place in Washington D.C., introduced by Peter Diamandis, X Prize Foundation CEO, hosting Nancy Pelosi, Speaker of the House of Representatives of United States, and many other important people.

During the show the three Winning Teams in the three categories of the contest have been announced and awarded.

For Mainstream class, with 4 wheels, seats 4, 200 miles range,
Edison 2, wins $ 5 milions.

For Alternative side by side class, seats 2, 100miles range,
Li-Ion Motors, wins $ 2.5 milions.

For Alternative tandem class, seats 2 in line, 100miles range,
X-Tracer, wins $ 2.5 milions.

The last one is the class where K-Way MOTUS was in.

At the end of the show, we can be proud of being in the short list of 24 Teams taking part to final stage of the contest.

Just to remind you how strict were the requirements to be met in order to pass, we want you to notice that there were two classes with only one contendent in the last series of tests.

We want to say to the Winning Teams:

Who Will Win the X Prize?

Cari amici,

K-Way MOTUS é riuscito ad aggiudicarsi la posizione numero 6 nel concorso Veicolo Piú Desiderato.
Vi vogliamo ricordare che erano 33 i veicoli in gara e alcuni di essi hanno sempre avuto un numero di voti enorme (con il forte sospetto che abbiano barato).

K-Way MOTUS succeeded to get position number 6 in Most Wanted Vehicle contest.

Vote K-Way MOTUS for the MOST WANTED vehicle

Cari amici,

Le ferie sono finite, prendiamo atto di dover tornare a lavoro e lasciare da parte i piacevoli svaghi delle vacanze.

Mentre l'Italia, voi compresi, si abbandonava alla ben nota indolenza di Agosto, l'organizzazione del X-Prize ha proseguito con i suoi programmi lanciando il quarto e ultimo concorso.

Stavolta si vota per 'the MOST WANTED', il Veicolo piú Desiderato.

La classifica sembra essere giá determinata con il primo Concorrente con oltre il 63% dei voti (C'e' un fortissimo sospetto che i nostri colleghi stiano giocando sporco, trovando il modo di votare un numero illimitato di volte).

Ad ogni modo ci piacerebbe risalire nella classifica almeno fino al quarto, magari il terzo posto.

I don't know about you and your colleagues in your own contries but here in Italy summer holidays are now just a memory for most of the people.

Time to get back to work and our usual duties.

Talking about that, given that X-Prize foundation has launched the fourth and last contest:

a smaller footprint

Have you ever been jammed in a congested road inside your car?

You might have thought that there where too many cars for such a road.

Every car with it's big footprint moves an average load of 1.2 people.

You might have thought that all the system could work better with fewer and smaller vehicles.

That's definitely true.

K-Way MOTUS is optimized for the Urban Environment.

It has the smallest footprint for vehicle that wants anyway to be performing and agile.

Being narrow, it can can squeeze beside stuck cars.

With K-Way MOTUS the road would be used to move around more people and less useless empty car weight.

Then when you stop, you can fit 3 of them in a regular parking space.

That's another way to keep the roads as free as possible to get a better circulation.

This means PRACTICAL in our language.

Don't forget to vote for us if you agree on this.

Ti sei mai trovato chiuso in auto, in coda nel traffico bloccato?

Forse hai pensato che c'erano troppe auto in strada.

Ogni auto con il suo grosso ingombro trasporta un carico medio di 1,2 persone.

Forse hai pensato che tutto il sistema potrebbe funzionare meglio con meno veicoli e con auto di dimensioni minori.

E' decisamente vero.

K-Way MOTUS é ottimizzato per l'Ambiente Urbano.

Ha l'ingombro minimo per un veicolo che non voglia rinunciare a prestazioni e manovrabilitá.

Essendo stretto puó sfilare tra le macchine ferme in coda.

Con K-Way MOTUS le strade potrebbero trasportare un maggior numero di persone anziché l'inutile peso delle auto vuote.

Quando devi parcheggiare poi, in un normale posto auto ce ne stanno 3.

Anche questo é un modo di tenere le strade libere per avere piú circolazione.

Questo per noi significa PRATICITA'.

Non dimenticare di votarci se la pensi come noi.

Easy Entry Device

What's in the picture above is a device that we haven't implemented yet in our K-Way MOTUS.
It shows how the vehicle leans and the seat turns when you open the door.
Purpose is to gain ease to the driver to get in and out of the car.
As said thie device it's not present at the moment but...

We want you to think how easy it is to sit in a car with its seat at approximately 3 ft from ground level (0,9 meters) compared to a car where the driver seats at less than a feet from street level.

Think about it and vote for us in MOST PRACTICAL VEHICLE contest!

La figura sopra mostra un dispositivo non ancora realizzato nel nostro K-Way MOTUS.

Il dispositivo inclina il veicolo e fa ruotare il sedile in seguito all'apertura dello sportello.

Lo scopo é quello di agevolare il passeggero nell'accesso e nell'uscita dal veicolo.

Come si é detto questo dispositivo non é ancora presente al momento, tuttavia...

Vogliamo farvi riflettere su quanto sia piú comodo salire a bordo di un veicolo che ha il posto di guida a 90 cm da terra piuttosto che in uno in cui il sedile é a meno di 30 cm dal suolo.
